Soccer and Beer

June 3, 2012

A few months ago, Matt told me exactly what he wanted for his birthday: USA vs. Scotland men’s soccer tickets for the May 26 game in Jacksonville, Fla.

It couldn’t have been more perfect. He loves the Men’s National Team, and for anyone who knows him, they also know of his love for Scotland.

So I snagged some tickets, and last Saturday we headed for Jacksonville for the game that evening.

Before the game, we ate and had a few beers at Kickbacks Gastropub, a place recommended on Beer Advocate with tons of beers on tap. It was a casual atmosphere and I had a couple local brews.

The game was lots of fun and they even had some Stone beer at the stadium!

The game was a bit one-sided. In fact, the only point for Scotland was ruled an own goal by the U.S. Apparently the Scotland team was having a difficult time dealing with the heat and humidity of the South.

On Sunday, we had planned a beach day, but Tropical Storm Beryl had other ideas.

We were able to run on the beach amid the drizzle, wind, and blowing sand. I’m just glad we were able to make it to the beach.

Since our plans for the day had to change, we headed to lunch at European Street Café, another restaurant with a solid beer selection. It even had a beer/wine store within the restaurant!

Then for the rest of the afternoon, we brewery-hopped at Green Room Brewing and Engine 15 Brewing. Both are small breweries that also have other beers on tap. I don’t recall anything being amazing, but it was a fun experience, and I was amazed at how many beer-centric places were at Jacksonville Beach.

It was a perfect weekend to celebrates Matt’s birthday with some of his favorite things: soccer and beer.
