DIY Bookcase to Bar

How many Pinterest projects have you undertaken? And how many turn out to be much more work (and more expensive) than you expected?

I’ve lost count of how many I’ve attempted, and some have turned out better than others. But a couple weeks ago I came across this project, and I immediately started searching for the pieces I needed to create it.

My finished product

For starters, I knew I didn’t want to sand and paint, so I was looking for a black bookcase. While walking through Target last weekend, I saw this bookcase. I probably would have bought it then, but I was already carrying too much. Then later while perusing Craigslist, I found the exact same bookcase for only $10. Done!

I scoured Amazon for an under-shelf wine glass rack and settled on this one, which works perfectly. It currently holds four champagne flutes, two white wine glasses, and two martini glasses. I left room while installing it, so I can always hang another next to it later.

The back “wallpaper” is actually nice wrapping paper from Paper Source, a suggestion from my friend Katy. It proved nearly impossible to find a small (but still big enough) size of real wallpaper for cheap. I ended up simply measuring the back of the bookcase, cutting the paper, and using Elmer’s glue (spread with a cloth) to stick the paper.

Total Cost: $27
Bookcase: $10
Wine glass holder: $9
“Wallpaper:” $8

Previously our “bar” was a coffee table pushed against a wall with liquor bottles on it. Definite upgrade.

This looks so great! Hopefully I will partake from your new bar in September!

I love this. I read this post like two days ago and I am still thinking about it.

So I have this one area of my room that needs something — it could be a reading chair, another bookshelf, etc. After seeing this, I’m thinking MAYBE I might have a bookcase bar in my bedroom. I’m sure that would be borderline alcoholic anywhere else in the country, but it’s literally the only place in our apartment that it would fit!

I also would like to get a record player at some point, maybe I would put it on top of the bookshelf (avoiding mixing anywhere near it of course)

Hope you attempt more Pinterest projects in the future! I’m usually intimidated by DIY, but this seems totally doable.

That’s awesome! I think a record player would definitely work on top of the bookcase/bar.

Honestly, this was my most successful Pinterest DIY so far. I’ll be sure to update with others later on!

Love this! Way to be ambitious and take a project from pinterest to real life! I’ve got a whole list of DIY I need to get on. Would you be interested in a collaborative crafty day one weekend? I have wine, and a glue gun. We could figure out the rest. 😉
